If you are filing a petition for a green card or a Visa or you have to avoid work or deportation then you will need an immigration lawyer. Most of them are honest and hardworking professionals who are there to help you. However, you have to be very careful when you are selecting one. There are several lawyers who are liars and not dependable. They charge exorbitant fees and will only take you around in circles. Here are a few tips on how to select the right lawyer for your case:

1) Lawyers dressed in exclusive and high-priced suits – Just because an American immigration lawyer is well dressed and flaunts his expensive clothing, does not mean he is a good lawyer. In fact, the posh suit might indicate that the fees charged by the lawyer will only hit the sky. Do not consider dressing as an indication that the lawyer is intelligent and updated. You must research well and find out if the lawyer is worth his salt.

2) Wrong Advice – Beware of unethical advice given by lawyers who are mere money-spinners. If the attorney tells you to document a lie, you are in the wrong hands. Never trust such a lawyer and do not even hire his or her services.

3) Petition preparers or Visa consultants – Such brands of people are not immigration lawyers in the right sense of the term. They just prey on foreigners who need some help for their immigration and only help in typing out the various documents. Any average person can prepare his or her petition and such visa consultants are useless for your immigration issues.

4) Lawyers that come to you at immigration offices – lawyers that look for business in immigration offices are numerous. They will approach you but this itself is a sign that the lawyer is out of business and is no good in his or her work. A good immigration lawyer is always busy doing his or her practice. He or she will not try to hunt new clients in offices. Do not appoint such lawyers.

5) Unreal promises – No one but the immigration judge, the USCIS or the Department of Homeland Defense can decide on the fate of your case. So, do not come in the talks of lawyers who claim that their success rate is a hundred percent. Not even the best immigration lawyer is in a position to guarantee the outcome of your case in any way. They only help you in your proceedings.

6) Speak to multiple attorneys – Mostly the good lawyers will be busy. If you meet them in their offices and speak to their staff, you will definitely get an idea as to how committed they are in their work. You must speak to a couple of lawyers and then compare the discussions before you decide to select any one of them.

The most significant arena in which immigration law trends and developments needs to be considered involves the number of men, women and children who currently are in the United States illegally. While no one really knows for certain, it is estimated that there are at least 12,000,000 people in the United States illegally at this point in time. A considerable percentage of this number of people originally hail from Mexico. However, it is important to keep in mind that there are a considerable number of illegal immigrants within the U.S.A. from other countries as well.

Historically, this is not the first time in the history of the U.S.A. that immigration issues have been on the forefront of the minds of people across the country. However, with that said, the present situation does involve a larger number of illegal immigrants than were under consideration in the past. For example, in the 1980s during the Administration of Ronald Reagan an issue involving immigration law arose involving 3,000,000 illegal immigrants that were said to be living in the country. The Reagan Administration essentially granted to these immigrants amnesty which allowed them to take a course through which they could become legal citizens of the United States.

The debate over how to best handle the 12,000,000 plus illegal immigrants is contentious at this juncture in time. In point of fact, despite this debate being ongoing for a significant period of time, no definitive solution has been reached.

One part of the debate involves the reality that these people in the country illegally are playing a role in the economy of the United States. Business owners have expressed concern that forcing these individuals to leave the country very well could have a significant impact on the economy of the country. This has become a particularly significant serious consideration considering the other problems facing the economy in the United States at this juncture in time.

Another concern that people express when it comes to illegal immigrants in the United States centers on the prospect that some of these individuals in the country illegal could be intent upon doing harm to the country and its people. Terrorism is a major concern in this day and age and it does impact the debate over illegal immigrants.

If you are an individual who has an issue in regard to his or her status in the United States, you do need to understand that there is a growing segment of the bar that is dedicating its practice to immigration law. Therefore, if you are facing the prospect of having to deal with the legality of your own status in the United States – or that of a family member – you will want to engage the services of a skilled and educated lawyer who practices in the area of immigration law to ensure that your own interests are protected today and into the future.

Immigration lawyers deal with issues relating to legal rights, responsibilities, and obligations of non-residents in the US. They help people who desire an entry in the US for employment, higher education, tourism or to gain permanent resident status. Moreover, immigration lawyers also help with visa waive offs, citizenship, immigration court proceedings, religious visas, and removal / deportation hearings.

Immigration lawyers and attorneys usually work with a private firm, however, some practice individually as well. Some lawyers might take a partial case than the entire case and charge a proportionate fee.

In the USA, practice of immigration law is respectful occupation. Many law firms through out the country have special departments of Immigration. The immigration cases can be further divided in to Business/Employment related cases, Family Reunification cases, General Naturalization, Deportation Defense, and Litigation and Appeals.

In general terms, there are two types of immigration: temporary or non-immigrant visas and the other, permanent employment visas or permanent resident cards or better known as green cards. There are different types of non-immigrant visas, but the two most common are the L-1 visa and the H-1B. The H-1B visa is the first legal step towards permanent immigration, this allows people to come and work in the U.S. in a variety of fields. The H-1B visa is only applicable and available to people who are sponsored by their U.S. employer and to people who have the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree or more who will be employed in positions with that level of education required.

Not all immigration lawyers are equally effective for each and every case. If you want to live in the US permanently and wishes to have an immigrant status, it may be worth your while to seek a firm that primarily works with immigration cases. Be on the watch for firms that have a high rating for approval on the certifications that they file.

Speaking about the Los Angeles Immigration Court; it falls under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge. The Immigration Legal Assistance Project has been launched by the Los Angeles County Bar Association. There are many law firms in Los Angles and other big cities which are solely practicing immigration law. Just type “Los Angeles Immigration attorney” in your search window, you will see at least a dozen famous names which offer phone and on line advice on immigration issues.

Generally law firms have specialist staff in different areas and if necessary they form an expert team to fight a particular case. Big firms have some influence in courts as their lawyers are well-known to judges all over the country. These firms handle all aspects of immigration practice including appeal for appraisal in detention issues, Writs of Habeas Corpus, filing review petitions asking mandamus for unpardonable USCIS delays and class action lawsuit.

If you are searching for an Immigration Lawyer in the Los Angeles, go through the yellow pages or search the net. You will find hundreds of lawyers willing to help you out.

In the last ten years, government funding for immigration enforcement has more than tripled, laws have increased the power of enforcement officers to monitor and detain noncitizens, and immigration detention has become the fastest-growing part of the U.S. prison system.

If you or someone you care about has been arrested by local law enforcement or immigration officials, or if you are applying for U.S. citizenship, the law office of Fountas & Associates is here to help with all questions of citizenship and immigration law in Las Vegas, Nevada and Clark County.

Fountas & Associates entire staff is dedicated to helping clients with their legal matters regarding:

    * Immigration naturalization in Las Vegas
* Citizenship application in Las Vegas
* Las Vegas immigration laws
* Citizenship test
* Family law
* Criminal law

Provide as much information as possible about your question. While this contact does not serve to establish an attorney/client relationship, it will allow Fountas & Associates legal team to begin an assessment of your case.
